He pursues the European idea not only with his work in the network, but also in his selection for the Emperor Otto Prize:
“Politics thrives on personalities and a positive image of Europe is conveyed not least by ‘great Europeans*’. The supra-regional appeal inherent in the Emperor Otto Prize in particular can thus strengthen and motivate local European activists and institutions. In addition, the prizewinners can use their ‘life’s work’ to emphasise that European unification is a process. Unlike a nation state, the EU is not a finished entity and is therefore fragile and prone to failure. The Emperor Otto Prize and its laureates symbolise the responsibility that this entails for everyone.”
