Magdeburg and Otto – the course of history almost prevented this symbiotic alliance. The beginning of the later emperor’s long reign was anything but harmonious. Numerous opponents challenged him for the throne. If Otto had not been granted the assertiveness and skill that would later earn him the title “the Great”, Magdeburg would perhaps not bear the nickname “Otto’s City” today or have the highest and most important municipal award named after him. Today, May 7, marks the 1051st anniversary of Otto the Great’s death. The Emperor Otto Foundation is committed to his legacy and ensures that today’s generations remember Otto I’s achievements for Magdeburg, Germany and Europe by providing information, supporting projects and events and, last but not least, awarding the Emperor Otto Prize.
